St Mungo’s has warmly welcomed the Homelessness Reduction Bill, introduced today by backbench Conservative MP Bob Blackman.

The announcement of the new Bill comes on the same day as new figures published by the Greater London Authority (GLA) show a seven per cent rise in rough sleeping in London during 2015-16. A total of 8,096 people were seen rough sleeping across London during the last year.

St Mungo’s is urging all MPs to get behind the Bill, calling it “a momentous opportunity” to improve the current legislation to prevent and tackle homelessness in England more effectively at a time when rough sleeping is continuing to rise.

The GLA publishes the CHAIN report each summer. CHAIN figures record the number of people contacted sleeping rough across London boroughs by a range of different outreach teams, gathered centrally through the Combined Homelessness Information Network (CHAIN).

The homelessness legislation: an independent review of the legal duties owed to homeless people, outlines the findings of an independent expert panel who assessed the strengths and weaknesses of current legislation in England.
